Common Hardware Issues

Hardware problems come in many flavors — intermittent, catastrophic, and everything in between. Here are the categories our engineers handle most often:

  • Laptop won't charge — dead battery, broken DC jack, failing charger, or motherboard power-delivery fault. Symptoms include "works on battery only", "battery percentage stuck", or "smells like burning near the port".
  • Server reboots randomly — overheating CPU, failing PSU, marginal RAM, or a flaky motherboard capacitor. Often presents as Memtest errors or kernel panics at unpredictable intervals.
  • Drive failures — SMART warnings, click-of-death on HDDs, SSD read-only mode, and RAID array degradation. Sometimes recoverable; sometimes requires professional data recovery.
  • Overheating — clogged fans, dried thermal paste, failed heat-pipe, or dust in the heatsink. Presents as thermal throttling, sudden shutdowns under load, or fan noise.
  • Power supply faults — desktop PSUs that crash under load, server PSUs that alarm, or wall-power issues that trip the UPS.
  • Networking gear — switches with dead ports, access points that drop clients, or routers that need a hard reset every 12 hours.

Diagnostics & Repair Process

  • 1. Symptom triage. The engineer reviews your description, log files, and any diagnostic codes you can capture.
  • 2. Hypothesis. The engineer proposes a most-likely cause and a test to confirm it.
  • 3. Test. Run the test (SMART check, Memtest, thermal probe, voltage reading). Document the result.
  • 4. Repair or replace. Swap the failing component, reapply thermal paste, replace the PSU, or rebuild the RAID array.
  • 5. Verify. Stress-test the system to confirm the fix holds. No fix is "done" until the original symptom no longer reproduces under load.

Remote Diagnostics vs Onsite Repair

Remote diagnostics

A surprising amount of hardware diagnosis can be done remotely. SMART data, Memtest output, thermal logs, and event-viewer entries can all be shared through Remote Assist. The engineer can often identify the failing component without ever touching the machine — saving you a visit fee.

Onsite repair

Physical replacement requires an onsite visit. Once remote diagnostics have identified the part, an onsite engineer brings tools and the replacement component (or orders it for delivery ahead of the visit). Onsite availability depends on where Fixspert engineers operate.

When to Replace vs Repair

Sometimes the right answer is to replace the machine rather than repair it. Heuristics our engineers use:

  • If the failing component costs more than 50% of a comparable new machine's price, replace the machine.
  • If the machine is more than 5 years old and the failure is motherboard-related, replace — the next component will fail soon.
  • If the failure is a single replaceable part (RAM, drive, fan, PSU) on an otherwise healthy machine, repair.
  • If data recovery is required, always attempt recovery first — the value of the data usually dwarfs the value of the machine.
